today is my usual saturday-television-spree, i started around 9 in the morning with a movie, a jackie chan movie, shanghai knights. i thought it was hilarious and owen wilson's soft voice was enchanting or so i thought...
come 1:00 i watched the contenders, then at 2:00 i watched UAAP for UST has a game and gladly they won, partly because JEMAL VIZCARRA was scorching hot, he scored 23 points can you belive that? well his really good although his three point shooting was very awful that afternoon 1 out 10? it doesnt matter because they won anyways, it was against a very depleted Adamson Falcons by the way.
then seventh heaven at 7:50 then boston public at 8:30.
it was with boston public that had me thinking all night. part of the story was about two high school boys organizing a bump fight (not so sure), it was for their web sites. they got two homeless drunkards and have them agreed to fight for $100 and if somebody bleeds additional $5o, then one of the fighters died. then they all have to go to court. ms. cooke the lawyer-turned-teacher represented for the two boys during the whole ordeal. during the summation of the probable cause hearing, ms. cooke said that "suffering sells". she mentioned allusions to fear factor, then the bachelor and all those reality tv, capitalizing on the suffering of their contestants and making money out of it.
so true. i couldn't agree more.
i have never been a huge fun of reality tv although at times a find it entertaining and interesting but the whole idea of going through a lot of humiliation and suffering just to get money is preposterous. the tension that builds up is incredulously sureal as if the organizers of the show are the one instigating the tension just to entice viewers and have them hanging by thier seats glued to the tv.
we need not to look at foreign shows, we have them right here. News Shows particularly TV Patrol, can you believe the amount of violence, abuse and manipulation going on in there? when the criminal is assaulted in front of the camera? talk about abuse of the sufferings, they abuse the vulnerability of the criminals, the intense emotions of the victim, for what? so the viewers would stay glued on tv. even if it wasnt worth some much air time they still show it just for the heck of it. of course the viewers are not completely faultless, we encouraged these kinds of scene and we have so much fun watching other people suffer, humiliated so that we can have our own good time, imagine that?
gone are the days, when everybody wishes good to everyone and dignity counts more than money. gone are the days when we can just watch tv and just have a wholesome fun.
another thing, sitcom??? when does this become lets-laugh-about-my-stupid-and-disastrous-life. it seems that their life are just one big comedy when in fact it involves each and everyone of them. when does the actor begins and the human being ends? i wish that tv wasn't so powerful that we have to be dependent on them and the way they shape our minds.
suffering sells. so sad that when someone suffers everybody laughs. what does it take to sell it, oh nothing just a thing called dignity and integrity.
think.
